Responsible Social Gaming, and the one thing you can lose

No real money is involved in any of our games, which removes most of what a policy like this usually has to worry about. It does not remove the clock, and the clock is what the rest of this page is about.

1. What this policy is for

PlayMischief is a free social casino run by Nightjar Play Ltd.. Every game is played with virtual Glints, which are handed out at no charge and hold no monetary value of any kind. We take no bets, hold no licence to take any, and have built the site so that nothing can be carried out of it.

That settles the money question and leaves the interesting one. A game designed to be pleasant for an hour can be pleasant for six, and six hours is a real cost even when the counters are not. This policy sets out what we do about that, what you can do about it, and what we will do if you ask us to block your access for a while.

2. Why there is no financial risk here

Not because we are careful with it, but because there is nowhere for it to enter. The design is the safeguard, and it is worth being specific about what that means.

• No stake is ever placed. A turn costs Glints, and Glints cost nothing to obtain.
• No balance is ever withdrawn, redeemed, exchanged for cash, goods, vouchers, chips or tokens, or moved to another player.
• No prize of any sort is awarded, and there is no draw, raffle, lottery or sweepstake anywhere on playmischief.com.
• No link on this site leads to a real-money gambling operator, and none ever will.

A long run of poor turns therefore costs precisely what a long run of good ones earns: nothing. The balance in the corner of the screen is a score kept for your own amusement, it lives in your browser, and clearing it is a five-second operation with no consequences. Read nothing into a number that cannot be spent.

Optional purchases exist and are described plainly in the Store. They buy a larger pile of counters and nothing else — not better odds, not extra games, not a standing of any kind. Nobody has to buy anything to play any game here for as long as they like.

3. These games teach you nothing about gambling

This is the part of the policy we would underline twice if the typography allowed it.

Our payout rates are chosen for rhythm. They are set so that a session has a shape — quiet stretches, the occasional good turn — and they are not modelled on any commercial product, licensed machine or published return figure. With no real money involved, we have no margin to protect, and the numbers can simply be whatever makes an hour pass agreeably.

Paid gambling differs from this in every respect that counts. It is engineered to keep a margin, its losses are permanent and denominated in rent, and the confidence a free game hands you is exactly the wrong instrument to carry into it. If time here has left you curious about the paying version, treat that curiosity as a signal rather than a plan.

4. The clock, and the reminder on it

Time is the only thing that can actually be spent here, so we count it out loud. After roughly three quarters of an hour of continuous play a quiet panel appears, tells you how long you have been playing, and invites you to stand up. It returns at similar intervals for as long as the tab stays open.

It cannot be permanently dismissed, and we are not going to add a switch for that. It costs you one click and it is the only thing on the site that is not there to keep you here. The two numbers behind it are stored by your browser for the life of the tab and are described in the Cookie Policy.

5. Keeping purchases small

Buying Glints is optional, and it is meant to stay a small indulgence for anyone impatient with the gap between free allowances. Since nothing can be gained, the worst a purchase can do is take the figure printed on it. Here is how to keep it to that.

• Decide a ceiling in advance, in money rather than in counters, and treat it as fixed.
• Remove saved cards from the browser and from the device, so that a purchase always requires a deliberate act.
• Turn on the spending controls in your operating system or app store: a password, fingerprint or face check on every purchase, or a monthly limit set to something modest.
• Switch off in-app or in-browser purchasing entirely at device level. Every game stays fully playable on the free allowance afterwards, with nothing withheld.
• Wait for the free top-up instead. It arrives every few hours, it costs nothing, and the games play identically either way.

Nothing at PlayMischief is a subscription. Nothing renews, nothing recurs, and there is no account to cancel — closing the tab ends your relationship with us completely. As matters stand the checkout is not even connected yet: no card can be charged on this site today. The advice above is written for the day it is.

6. Nobody under eighteen

PlayMischief is for adults of eighteen and over. We ask before you start playing; a no ends it there, writes nothing to the device and asks again on the next visit. Nobody below that age may use the site, and an adult sitting alongside makes no difference to it. We do not knowingly collect anything at all from a minor.

An age question is a courtesy, not a lock, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. The reliable controls sit on the device itself, in the hands of whoever owns it.

• Use the parental controls, content filters and screen-time limits built into the phone, tablet or computer. They are more effective than anything a website can do.
• Give a child their own supervised profile rather than an adult one, and keep the adult account behind a password the child does not have.
• Keep payment methods locked. A card left unlocked on a shared device does not ask who is holding it.
• Talk about what a social casino is. A game that looks like gambling and costs nothing is a confusing object for a young person, and the conversation is worth more than a filter.

7. When it stops being entertainment

Free games are not harmless by definition. The habit of reaching for one is formed the same way whether or not there is money attached, and a habit is worth noticing early. None of the following is an accusation; each is simply worth being honest with yourself about.

• You open a game to change how you feel rather than to pass an hour.
• The hours come out of sleep, out of work, or out of time somebody was expecting from you.
• You have bought counters to get past a feeling rather than to skip a wait.
• You would rather not say out loud how long you were playing last night.
• A poor run feels like something we owe you, even though nothing is at stake.
• The reminder panel irritates you instead of simply being noticed.
• Real-money gambling has begun to look like the sensible next step.

The last one deserves its own sentence. If a free game has made a paid one look reasonable, the free game has stopped doing its job, and the right response is to close this site rather than to open another. If money is already involved somewhere else, please treat that as serious and speak to somebody qualified about it.

8. Stopping, and blocking access

Stopping for an evening is trivial: close the tab. There is no subscription, no streak to protect, no daily reward to forfeit and nobody who will email you about coming back, because we do not have your address unless you gave it to us yourself.

Wiping the balance

Emptying what this browser has stored for playmischief.com takes the balance with it, along with the two cookies and everything else on the device. The next visit opens at 5,000 Glints, which is where everyone begins. Instructions for each browser sit in the Cookie Policy, and the loss costs you nothing, since there was never a value in there to lose.

Blocking the site

The firmest control available is the one on your own device: a site blocker, a content filter, a supervised profile or an extension that refuses this domain outright. We would rather recommend that than pretend a website can lock itself from the inside.

Self-exclusion by letter

If you would like it on the record, send a letter to [email protected], put the word Self-exclusion in the subject line, and name the period you want your access kept shut — six months, a year, or for good. We answer within two business days, confirm the period back to you, and there the correspondence ends.

We will be honest about what our half of it is worth. PlayMischief has no accounts and no logins, so there is no profile for us to suspend. What we undertake is this: we will not contact you for the period you name, we will remove your address from anything we hold beyond what the law requires us to keep, and we will not treat a later message from you as a reason to write back about the games. The technical half of a self-exclusion belongs to your device, and the section above explains it.

Lifting one before it expires takes a second letter from the same address, and we will not act on it for at least twenty-four hours. A request made at two in the morning deserves a second look in daylight.

9. Help from outside PlayMischief

We are a games company, not a clinical service, and we are not going to pretend to be one. If play of any sort — here or, more importantly, anywhere that charges — has started to weigh on your money, your sleep or the people around you, help exists and is usually free.

• Most countries run a national helpline for gambling-related harm, staffed by people trained for exactly this conversation and reachable at any hour.
• Confidential counselling and support groups exist in most regions, in person and online, for the person playing and for the family around them.
• A family doctor is a reasonable first step, and can refer you onward without any of it becoming a matter of public record.
• National self-exclusion schemes exist in many jurisdictions and can shut every licensed real-money operator at once, which is more than any single site can do.

We deliberately publish no links and name no organisation here. Independent services change their addresses, their funding and sometimes their names, and a stale link on a page like this is worse than none at all. A search for gambling support alongside the name of your country will find the current one, and a national helpline will know the rest.

10. Reaching a person

Anything on this page can be raised with us directly. Write to [email protected] or use the contact form, where Responsible gaming is one of the topics on the list. Messages of this kind are read first and answered within two business days by a person, not a template.

Our operator and data-controller details, and what happens to a message once it reaches us, are set out in the Privacy Policy. The rules of the site itself live in the Terms of Use.
